Forty-five myths retold for readers aged 8 to 12, drawn from twenty-two traditions — Korean, Inuit, Māori, Hawaiian, Yoruba, Akan, Persian, Turkic, Greek, Norse, Irish, Finnish, Egyptian, Mesopotamian, Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese, Hindu, Maya, Aztec, Andean and Zulu. It is built against the roughly eighty-percent-Greek children's mythology shelf: no culture gets more than four stories and Greece gets no more than three. Each story runs 900–1,000 words with one black-and-white illustration, and the back matter carries a hand-drawn world map, per-culture cards, a sourced pronunciation guide and a Who's Who. Australian Aboriginal material is deliberately excluded, and the book says so.
